Lemon Flavored Olive Oil

Updated: Nov 6, 2024

There's nothing I love more than receiving something that is homemade. It feels extra special and unique knowing that someone took the time to make it themselves. Flavored oils are simple to make and can be ready minutes. Whether it's the holidays, a birthday, or last-minute hostess gift, flavored oils are certain to be enjoyed by all.

Lemon Flavored Olive Oil

  • 2 lemons, washed and scrubbed clean

  • 1 c. olive oil

Directions

Peel large strips of lemon zest using a vegetable peeler. Be careful not to get the white pith as it will add bitterness to the oil. In a saucepan, add the olive oil and lemon peels and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for another 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Strain olive oil into a sterilized jar. It will be tempting to add a few lemon rinds because it looks so pretty in the bottle, but avoid the temptation as it may compromise the oil.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Something to Remember

Unlike store-bought flavored oils which have been acidified for longer shelf life and can be stored at room temperature, homemade oils have a much shorter shelf life and must be stored in the refrigerator to prevent bacteria growth.
